Where to Start

An integral part of both leading yourself and leading others is the ability to navigate change. By developing this skill, you can better manage your own reactions to change and effectively support your team through transitions, ultimately reducing stress and enhancing overall performance.

Did you know there are a series of emotions and different phases we move through before accepting change?  
 
Navigating change in the workplace can be more manageable with the right coaching questions. Here are some questions you can use for yourself and your team to effectively navigate the different phases of change

Denial Phase

For Yourself:

  • What aspects of this change am I finding hard to accept?
  • How can I gather more information to better understand the change?
  • What are the potential benefits of this change that I might be overlooking?

For Your Team:

  • What concerns do you have about this change?
  • How can we support each other in understanding the reasons behind this change?
  • What information do you need to feel more comfortable with this change?


Resistance Phase

For Yourself:

  • What specific aspects of this change are causing me frustration or fear?
  • How can I address these feelings constructively?
  • What small steps can I take to start adapting to the change?

For Your Team:

  • What challenges are you facing with this change?
  • How can we address these challenges together?
  • What support or resources do you need to feel more confident about this change?


Exploration Phase

For Yourself:

  • What new opportunities does this change present?
  • How can I experiment with different approaches to adapt to the change?
  • What skills or knowledge do I need to develop to navigate this change successfully?

For Your Team:

  • What new ideas or approaches can we explore to adapt to this change?
  • How can we collaborate to make the most of the opportunities this change presents?
  • What training or development do we need to support our adaptation to this change?

Acceptance Phase

For Yourself:

  • How can I fully embrace this change and integrate it into my daily routine?
  • What positive outcomes have resulted from this change?
  • How can I continue to grow and develop in this new environment?

For Your Team:

  • How can we celebrate our successes in adapting to this change?
  • What lessons have we learned from this change that we can apply in the future?
  • How can we continue to support each other as we move forward?

 

General Coaching Questions

For Yourself:

  • What is my overall attitude towards change, and how can I improve it?
  • How can I maintain a positive mindset during times of change?
  • What strategies have worked for me in the past when dealing with change?


For Your Team:

  • How can we create a culture that embraces change and innovation?
  • What can we do to ensure open communication and transparency during times of change?
  • How can we support each other in maintaining a positive and proactive approach to change?
